Give solutions, parties urged

Former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has said all political parties in the country are supposed to create policies which answer to current problems facing the country.
He made the remarks yesterday when inaugurating Chama Cha Mapinduzi campaigns for the Mbeya Rural by-election, scheduled for January 25.
Speaking at a rally held at Ilembo village in Isangati division in the district, Mr Mwinyi said one of the major reasons to re-introduce pluralistic politics in the country was to give wananchi more choices in policy thinking.
He said people were supposed to have a wide range of preference when making decisions on how and who should govern them.
"They can only do so effectively if there are quality political parties, with class policies which provide answers to their problems," he said.
He said the Government allowed multipartism so as to enable people to have a variety of guiding principle charted by various parties, from which they could pick the best.
"For that reason, I call upon all politicians to practice politics knowing that they are supposed to be guided by policies and not obscenities, force, ridicule and cheating," the retired president underlined.
He said that all of these things would not help people move away from poverty or other problems. He advised voters in the constituency to pick a candidate from a party whose leaders have shown high level of understanding of their problems and clear indication that they have capacity to solve them.
"But I want you people to understand that our country is vast and all people need development as you. Therefore we should be patient as the Government strategises on how to fulfill this responsibility," he said.
He appealed to residents of the constituency and politicians who are aiming for the post, to make sure that whatever they would do during the campaign, leaves the residents with their unity and peace.
"Doing anything different will be tantamount to abrogating the core principles of democracy," he emphasised.
