CCM moves to empower Kilimanjaro women

Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) women wing (UWT) in Kilimanjaro Region is planning to start women competition in business and politics, with the view to encourage more women to join politics and at the same time engage in income generating and subsequently fight poverty.

The UWT Kilimanjaro regional Chairperson, Mrs Regina Chonjo, said the competition will be conducted every six months and involve all the districts in the region. She said three winners will be awarded in both business and politics, but did not elaborate on the kind of prizes to be offered.
“This competition is aiming at encouraging women to engage in income generation to reduce poverty, at the same time participate in politics without fear,” she said. Mrs Chonjo said UWT in the region want more women to join politics, at the same time engage in activities that would earn them income and alleviate poverty.

Mrs Chonjo who was elected to the post at the end of last year, promised to equip all UWT district offices and started by giving four computers and printers to Moshi, Rombo, Same and Mwanga offices. She promised to find sponsors to get computers for the remaining districts plus other office equipment.

The CCM Regional chairperson, Ms Vicky Nsilo –Swai, commended the move and called on women in the region to utilize available opportunities to fight poverty. She exhorted the women to stop wasting time in conflicts and instead engage in developmental activities, particularly those aimed at rescuing them from vicious circle of poverty. “Conflicts among ourselves is the biggest obstacle for our development, we have to change and work towards poverty eradication in our families,” she said.
