Two Americans among passengers killed in road accident in northeastern Tanzania

Two Americans were among the passengers killed in a road accident when a bus crashed into a truck in northeastern Tanzania on Sunday afternoon, local media reported on Tuesday.

One of the dead Americans has been identified as Kathryin Baxter, holder of passport number 089355273 issued in New Orleans, the United States, in December 2000. But the other dead American has not been identified, the local daily the Citizen reported.

Around 30 were killed when the accident took place in Korogwe, about 210 km northwest of the Dar es Salaam as the speeding bus was traveling to Dar es Salaam from the northwestern town of Arusha. The police are holding the driver of the bus, Samwel Paulo, 34, for questioning.

Most of Tanzanians rely on buses as their daily public transport between towns and high speed is usually blamed for the road accidents.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in road accidents last year in Tanzania, the traffic police authority had said.
