Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda warns Chinese firm for delaying road project

Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has threatened to take action against a Chinese company building the Arusha-Namanga road if it fails to complete its work within the agreed time.
Pinda who is in Arusha for a three-day official tour gave the warning on Saturday after he inspected the construction work.

“Chinese people are our friends, but we won’t allow laxity. We want the road to be completed within the agreed time”, he said.

The tarmac road linking Tanzania and Kenya is 104.4 kilometres long and 11 metres wide as required by international standards.

Construction started in July this year and is expected to be completed within three years, but todate, the Chinese company has done little, claiming that it has had to order some construction materials from China, and has also failed to find locally qualified engineers.

However, the resident engineer pledged to the prime minister that the company will speed up the construction process to ensure that work is completed within the set time. The Premier promised to visit the road again in January next year.
