President Jakaya Kikwete has called on Tanzanians pursuing studies abroad to return home after finishing their courses so they can use their skills to improve the country’s socio-economic development.
Kikwete made the call on Wednesday at Melia Santiago Hotel here at a luncheon with students pursuing different studies in Santiago de Cuba province. Among the students, six are pursuing degrees in medicine, two in engineering and one in economics.
He urged the students to study hard so that at the end of their courses they returned home with full knowledge and skills that would help the country.
The president said the country was in dire need of medical doctors and other experts.
According to Tanzania’s Ambassador to Cuba Peter Kallaghe, there were about 43 students studying in different universities in Cuba.
In the afternoon, President Kikwete visited the Granjita Siboney Memorial House where Cuban revolutionary leader Alejandro Castro Ruz and his colleagues planned the failed revolution in 1953.
The said house was also visited by Mwalimu Julius Nyerere when he visited the region on September 20, 1974. Kikwete is the second Tanzanian president to visit Cuba.
Later in the evening Kikwete visited the Moncada Barracks, which was built in 1859, and was briefed about the history of the 1959 Cuban revolution.
President Kikwete is in Cuba for a three-day official visit following an invitation by his host, Cuban President Raul Castro Ruz.
President Kikwete was expected to complete his visit yesterday
